Wing Chun History

Traditional Ip Man Wing Chun (TIMWC) Indonesia was previously known as Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia, a community organization which was established in the early of January 2010 by 4 people: Martin Kusuma, Arifin, Abraham Nugroho and Dino Limawan.

FounderOn 6th of November 2011, Martin Kusuma was appointed to become a bai shi student of GM. Samuel Kwok traditionally in Samuel Kwok Ip Man Traditional Wing Chun Kungfu Indonesia Seminar held by Wing Chun Kungfu Academy Medan. Since then, Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia had officially accepted disciples with Martin Kusuma as the main instructor (Sifu).

The mission of Brotherhood of Wing Chun is to introduce authentic, traditional Ip Man Wing Chun to anyone in Indonesia without discriminating at social status, religion, race or wealth. This mission is well accepted in Indonesia, as shown by the rapid growth of Brotherhood of Wing Chun from 2010 to 2014.

Below timeline is the recapitulation of some milestones of Brotherhood of Wing Chun Indonesia:

  • 17th – 20th March 2012
    The first wing chun examination held by Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia. The examination materials that were created on this date have been kept until the present day. (detail information)
  • 4th of May 2012
    Brotherhood of Wing Chun published a program called Wing Chun Journey program, where Martin Kusuma and his assistants will travel around Indonesia for a free seminar and training. (detail information)
  • 8th – 11th June 2012
    Martin Kusuma became the only representative from Asia in GM. Samuel Kwok’s Enter the Dragon Training Camp held at Aquitine, France. (detail information)
  • 14th – 24th August 2012
    On this period, Martin Kusuma travelled to Hong Kong to learn from GGM Ip Ching. He also had an opportunity to befriend with GGM. Siu Yuk Men, one of GGM. Ip Man’s disciple. In this journey, not only Martin Kusuma learnt wing chun from GGM. Ip Ching, he also learnt one important message from GGM Ip Ching, that is, a disciple are not to learn wing chun from a teacher who is outside of their lineage. (detail information)
  • 25th August 2012
    Martin Kusuma has published a wing chun textbook called “Teknik dan Kunci Dasar Wing Chun Tradisional Ip Man” (The Basic Techniques and Keys to Traditional Ip Man Wing Chun). This textboox was printed twice, and is now already sold out. The few remaining books were given away for free to social institutions such as public libraries, school libraries, and Islamic boarding schools in rural areas in Indonesia. (detail information)
  • 29th – 30th September 2012
    Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BOWC) Indonesia held the 1st International Ip Man Traditional Wing Chun seminar by GM. Samuel Kwok in Jakarta. This seminar was attended by more than 70 people, some were from outside of Java island (Bali and Sumatra). (detail information)

    Martin Kusuma was registered as the first permanent member of Ving Tsun Athletic Association (VTAA), Hongkong from Indonesia. (detail information)
  • 20th October 2014
    Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia held the first bai shi ceremony to acknowledge disciples in a traditional way, with Martin Kusuma as the Sifu. (detail information)
  • 3rd – 4th November 2012
    Martin Kusuma was invited to the 3rd Ving Tsun Athletic Association World Conference in Foshan, China. As the only representative in Indonesia, he met and started to build relationships with disciples of GGM. Ip Man and GM. Ip Ching, such as GM. Chu Song Ting, GM. Lee Kiu Yuen, GM. Lee Kin Yum, GM. Siu Yuk Men, Billy Davidson and James Wong. (detail information)
  • 11th November 2012
    Martin Kusuma was recognised as the first permanent instructor of Ving Tsun Athletic Association (VTAA), Hongkong from Indonesia. (detail information)
  • 23rd – 24th February 2013
    The first seminar of Wing Chun Journey Program was held in Semarang, Central Java. The seminar was attended by 31 people who came from cities in Central Java such as Semarang, Tegal, Kudus, Pati, Solo, Yogyakarta, Purwodadi. (detail information)

    Komunitas Tradisional Ip Man Wing Chun Semarang and Komunitas Tradisional Ip Man Wing Chun became the official sub-divisions of Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia. (detail information)

    Martin Kusuma was registered as the first and the only permanent member of Ving Tsun Ip Ching Athletic Association (VTICAA), Hongkong from Indonesia. (detail information)

  • 1st – 8th March 2014
    Wing Chun Journey to Hong Kong and Foshan. This is the first international Wing Chun Journey program held by Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia. Members attended seminars held by GGM. Ip Ching & GGM. Chu Shong Tin. They also visited the graveyard of GGM. Ip Man. In this journey, members took home a deeper understanding about the culture, history, lineage, and knowledge of traditional Ip Man wing chun. (detail information)

    Brotherhood of Wing Chun (BoWC) Indonesia has successfully championed in Ving Tsun Tournament, Hong Kong, in the below categories:
    Taolu/Wing Chun Forms Female Category:
    IKA SIRANA, received a Gold Award (equal to a first place) in Siu Lim Tao and Chum Kiu forms competition.
    Taolu/Wing Chun Forms Male Category:
    DESTYAN ADIWASSESA, received a Silver Award (equal to a second place) in Chum Kiu form.
    Chi Sao/Sticking Hands Tournament:
    HARTONO LUKIDI made it to the semi-final round.
